Jobs Monday

So it’s late Monday because we’ve been a little busy around here…a better title might be Jobs Tuesday.  Regardless, there are some great options out there this week.

Wisconsin Social Worker/Filmmaker Shares Ardita’s Story

My name is Jessica Haven, I’m a social worker and I live in Madison, Wisconsin with my husband and pets. We are aspiring filmmakers with a strong interest in sharing human rights stories with the world. I am not reaching out to you today on my own behalf, but on behalf of a vibrant and kind ten-year-old girl whom I met only a few days ago. Her name is Ardita Bilalli and I read an article about her in a newspaper recently. I then made contact through her website to find out how I could help and before I knew it, I was in her living room with the camera rolling as she, her mother and her uncle shared her moving and urgent story.

Busking?

Local Madison musicians took over every corner of State Street for an hour Saturday afternoon and raised almost $1,800 for the Literacy Network.  What made this event unique? First of all, a name that was both confusing and intriguing:Busking for Books.

Get out the Vote: Pepsi Refresh for Wisconsin

Make sure to check out the Pepsi Refresh challenge.  A quick search for “Wisconsin” brought up 41 projects from organizations and individuals around the state.

In addition to using your 10 votes a day (vote for multiple projects- or spend them all in the same place!), it’s really fun to see all of the cool project proposals.

And they make it easy.  To be honest, I was annoyed when I tried to vote only to be greeted by a  “please sign up and create a log in” page.  Really,  I was going to abandon ship.  But  I kept reading and was pleasantly surprised at how easy it was to sign in using a Facebook account and to promote your votes using twitter.

Helen Bader Institute for Nonprofit Management: Open House

Heads up if you’re interested in continuing education!

Speaking from experience – going to open houses, attending a class and scheduling time to talk to an admissions officer are all well worth the time.  One of the somewhat painful realities of working in nonprofits is the complete lack of employer assistance in funding continuing education.  I don’t know if this is right or wrong (should donor dollars go toward my MBA? A topic for another post).   In the mean time, do your research and make a smart choice.

The Helen Bader Institute for Nonprofit Management (University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee)  is hosting an open house April 20th, 2010 from 5:30pm – 7:00pm.

Location: Hefter Conference Center
3271 N. Lake Drive
