The Madison Ballet is looking for a new Executive Director. Curiously, we couldn’t find a job description/post on the Madison Ballet website…but did come up with an extensive one on Craigslist. Read on to see if you have what it takes.

Job Summary
The Executive Director is the chief operating officer and the chief financial officer of The Madison Ballet. The Executive Director is knowledgeable of all aspects of the organization and adheres to the mission and purpose as stated in the Bylaws of The Madison Ballet. All administrative employees of The Madison Ballet report to the Executive Director
The Executive Director reports to the Board of Directors, with direct supervision via the Board President, and serves as a non-voting member of the Board of Directors.
Essential Functions
The Executive Director will set and achieve development and fundraising goals by
• Working with staff and Executive Committee to set goals for obtaining income and in-kind donations from foundations, sponsors, individual patrons, and businesses;
• Developing prospective grant sources, the preparation of grant applications, and the reporting requirements of grantors;
• Developing sponsor benefit packages, recruitment, and follow-up;
• Overseeing the development and implementation of a program to increase income from individual donors;
• Identifying sources for appropriate in-kind donations and obtaining those donations;
• Leading staff, Directors, and other volunteers to organize and implement appropriate fundraising events in the community.
• Leading Directors through a regular 3 year strategic planning process, with benefit of outside counsel, and creating corresponding annual business plans and budgets.
The Executive Director will achieve appropriate community visibility and positive public image for the company by
• Effectively representing and telling the story of The Madison Ballet to community and civic organizations;
• Organizing, training and supporting staff persons/interns, Directors and volunteers to represent the company in the community;
• Overseeing outreach and educational programs for schools and other community organizations;
• Attending public performances of the company
The Executive Director will provide administrative leadership to all aspects of the organization by
• Providing operational reports as required by the Board of Directors;
• Administering a performance evaluation system for direct reports of The Madison Ballet;
• Maintaining Board of Directors notes and preparing all handouts for board and executive committee meetings in advance of the meeting dates;
• Maintaining job descriptions for board members, committee members, and other volunteers/interns;
• Maintaining an organizational calendar of events and meetings;
• • Facilitating communication among all employees;
• Conducting regularly scheduled staff meetings;
The Executive Director will manage all financial operations of the company by
• Developing an annual budget in partnership with the Executive Committee and the Finance Committee of the Board of Directors;
• Operating the company within the annual budget as approved by the Board of Directors;
• Providing direction for maintenance of financial records of the company with the guidance of the company’s the Treasurer of the Board of Directors;
• Monitoring the cash flow of the company;
• Developing and preparing, in partnership with the Treasurer and Finance Committee all financial reports requested by the Board of Directors.
• Working with Executive Committee (and legal advisors) to approve all contracts and signing all approved contracts on behalf of the organization.
• Securing competitive bids from vendors who will provide a service or project to the Madison Ballet in the amount of $1500 or more.
The Executive Director will set and achieve marketing goals by
• Developing goals for all categories of ticket sales;
• Developing, with staff and/or contracted persons, the strategies for achieving sales goals;
• Developing and approving all marketing publications, advertisements, public service announcements, press releases and electronic communications;
• Evaluating the effectiveness of marketing strategies.
• Maintaining updated website and other social media pages;
• Maintaining donor database/mailing/e-mailing list;
• Developing and implementing marketing plans;
• Leading media and public relations as chief spokesperson for The Madison Ballet.

Qualifications
The Executive Director of The Madison Ballet should possess the following experiences and qualifications:
• Strong working knowledge of the structure, purpose, and management of non-profit organizations; preferred experience as an Executive Director of a 501c3 organization;
• Experience developing strategic plans, annual plans and budgets.
• Strong working knowledge of financial management and financial reporting;
• Strong fundraising skills and outcomes;
• Understanding of the role and needs of a performing arts organization;
• Skills in interpersonal communication and team-building;
• Ability to work effectively with a board of Directors and develop and maintain business relationship with the Artistic Director;
• Strong computer skills to include word processing, spreadsheets, presentations (power point), electronic communication, and, preferably, financial management software;
• A baccalaureate degree in business, non-profit management; fine arts management; or other appropriate academic discipline is preferred;
• Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
